Rafael Devers hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning, starter Kutter Crawford and five relievers combined on one-hit ball and the Boston Red Sox beat the Seattle Mariners 2-0 on Sunday.
Boston capped off a successful West Coast swing by chilling Seattle’s bats by allowing only catcher Luis Torrens’ single in the fifth inning. The Red Sox went 8-2 on their 10-game road trip.
Seattle hoped Devers didn’t even make it to the plate in the eighth, but reliever Paul Sewald hit Rob Refsnyder with a 2-2 fastball.
Sewald made Devers 0-2 and threw a fastball out of the strike zone. Devers hit that pitch into the Red Sox bullpen in deep left field for his 14th home run.
It was the second straight day that Sewald (3-2) allowed a home run, following Bobby Dalbec’s homer in the ninth on Saturday.
Tyler Danish (2-0) was Boston’s third reliever and got the win.
Tanner Houck pitched the ninth for his second save. It was Boston’s fourth shutout during their trip.
For the Red Sox, Dominican Devers 3-1 with a run scored and two RBIs. The Mexican Alex Verdugo 4-1.
For the Mariners, the Venezuelans Torrens 3-1, and Eugenio Suárez 4-0, as well as the Dominican Julio Rodríguez.
