Developing the Future: Dallas Cowboys Trade for Quarterback Trey Lance

FRISCO, Texas – The Dallas Cowboys caused a surprising stir on the trade market Friday night when the team sent a fourth-round pick to the San Francisco 49ers for former No. 3 overall pick quarterback Trey Lance.

Owner and general manager Jerry Jones was in attendance at the Jerry Jones Classic (high school football game) Saturday morning and commented on the trade decision for the former North Dakota State star, as he views it as an intriguing opportunity to develop a player who still sees a bright future.

“Well, he gives us the opportunity, at a level we’ve probably never reached in the draft, to work on and develop a young quarterback,” Jones said. “And you have to do that.”

The call to San Francisco was quick Friday when Jones said the front office was aggressive regarding landing Lance. While the move puts a young quarterback behind Dak Prescott, Jones says it in no way affects his confidence in his QB1.

“We got to this and, figuratively speaking, we didn’t even hang up on them, because we wanted him to bring it here,” he said. “Don’t be misled in any way because we’re still banking on our success in Dak. We just need the Dallas Cowboys, where we can, to develop the best we can for the future of quarterbacks.”

Reports surfaced Friday night that the front office had a good view of Lance during the draft process, and now they got their wish to draft him with this window of opportunity.

“His athletic ability, his arm strength,” Jones said of what stood out in the draft process. “And frankly, we knew he hadn’t played much football compared to, let’s say, what Dak had played in college. But he’s very athletic and, in my opinion, he can really do both: be a running threat and shoot.” .

Speaking of Prescott, Jones is excited regarding what he can do as a mentor to advance Lance in the quarterback room.

“[Prescott] it’s just, in terms of what a quarterback is, that number one is someone the team will follow,” Jones said. “He’s the best I’ve ever seen or heard in my life. And just hanging out in the company of him will be a great advantage for [Lance]”.

The Cowboys have prided themselves of late on being a “draft and development” franchise, and the unique opportunity to bring in Lance following his limited experience might serve as a unique extension of that philosophy.

“Well, first of all, he got great reps and a good time with a great trainer in San Francisco,” Jones said. “That will help him a lot. Those guys are great coaches and they know what they’re doing. In my mind, he’s way ahead of where he was when he was drafted.”

“We’ll give him that kind of exposure with our coaches. The main thing is that our quarterback room, with the best leader I’ve ever seen in Dak Prescott, will give him every opportunity to be the quarterback he has the potential to be.”
