Developing Strategies to Replace Hamas and Restore Peace in Gaza: Insights from Israeli Experts

There is a consensus in Israel that Hamas should be removed from power. However, who will control Gaza in their place in the future remains unclear: the government remains silent. But Israeli experts are already developing ideas.

At least 212 hostages from Israel are being held by the radical Islamic group Hamas after its October 7 terror attacks, an Israeli army spokesman said on Sunday, after another night of heavy attacks on the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip. Tanks and troops are there at the border, apparently ready for a ground offensive. Humanitarian aid to the hard-hit Palestinian territory is getting off to a slow start; on Sunday, 14 trucks carrying relief supplies from Egypt reached the Gaza Strip again. For the first time, urgently needed fuel was brought into the country again.

The questions that dominate these days in Israel are: How many targets did the Air Force hit, how many terrorists were wiped out? After the devastating terrorist attack by Hamas a good two weeks ago, the country is pooling its forces for the counterattack: those responsible for the attack are to die, their military infrastructure is to be destroyed and their political rule over the Gaza Strip is to be ended. Living next door to a regime that not only has Israel’s extinction written into its statutes, but also seeks to bring about it through atrocities against women and children – there has been a broad consensus in this country since October 7th that this is no longer possible.
