Develop a strategic framework for the Great Lakes region

The President of the Republic Evariste Ndayishimiye received in audience on Tuesday August 2, 2022 at the Presidential Palace of Gitega, the Ambassador of the European Union (EU) to Burundi Claude Bochu. Since the Head of State has been appointed head of the East African Community (ECA), the two high personalities discussed the challenges of this Community.

“We discussed the challenges of this Community and its role as a sort of president-in-office of the ECA. The European Union is considering developing a strategic framework for the Great Lakes region,” said Claude Bochu, EU Ambassador to Burundi.

The role of President Ndayishimiye, now at the head of the ECA, is interesting for the consolidation of peace in this decidedly difficult region with eastern DRC, he added. Mr. Bochu took this opportunity to congratulate the Head of State on his appointment as head of the East African Community (ECA).

At the bilateral level, their discussions focused on major infrastructure projects in Burundi, the rule of law, human rights, in short, “a series of subjects that we addressed in a very courteous, warm and confidently as before,” said Mr. Bochu.

His goal was first to thank the President of the Republic for the distinction he bestowed on him on Independence Day last July. “I saw it as a sign of confidence not only in myself, but also in the team of all the EU ambassadors, especially the solidity of the ties between the EU and Burundi”, specified the EU Ambassador to Burundi.
