A large number of satellite images have been released showing how much Bahmut, Ukraine’s largest battleground, has been destroyed by the Russian military’s indiscriminate bombing so far, before and following.
On the 17th (local time), CNN broadcasting in the United States quickly shared several satellite photos provided by Maksur Technology, a private satellite company in the country, on the ‘Live Update’ page on the topic of ‘Russia’s war in Ukraine’.
CNN explained that these photos show before and following the damage of Bahmut, which was destroyed by war over the past year. The shooting points were May 8 last year and May 15 this year, respectively.
The first photos shared by the media show how a large complex of apartment buildings surrounding a school in Bahmut was completely destroyed and disappeared in just one year. All the trees planted here and there have been burned down, and the buildings and grounds with vague traces of being shot are all covered with brown dust.
Subsequent photos are of Bahmut looking down from a little further away, but this too is hard to find. The city, which looked generally brightly colored, such as green and white, with trees and buildings in harmony, was destroyed by indiscriminate bombing and was also covered with brown dust, turning into a foreground with white smoke billowing as if to indicate that the bombardment was still going on.
Finally, a photo of the Bahmut University campus and residential complex, as well as the remains of a broadcast tower following it was destroyed. There are not many places where the roof is not in good shape, and only the outer walls and frames remain, showing that the buildings were built in the past.
Ukraine-Russia, a fierce battle pushing each other like spears and shields in Bakhmut
In Bahmut, a fierce battle has been going on for nine months, with Ukrainian and Russian troops pushing and pushing each other like spears and shields.
Earlier, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine announced that it had recaptured regarding 20 square kilometers of territory in recent days following counterattacking in the battle over Bahmut.
In a follow-up briefing that day, Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malyaar said, “Our forces did not lose regarding 20 square kilometers of recaptured areas. “Intense fighting continues around the city, with Ukrainian forces advancing in some areas.” However, he also acknowledged that the tide is changing in real time, saying, “Russian forces are advancing slightly (in some other areas).”
A spokesman for the Eastern Armed Forces of Ukraine, Serhi Cherevati, said on the same day that Ukrainian forces had advanced up to 500 meters in the direction of Bakhmut the day before (16th) and were continuing to attack the flanks of the Russian forces.
The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed that Russian airborne units had made progress, but acknowledged continued Ukrainian counterattacks on the flanks of Bakhmut near Bodanivka (5 km northwest of Bakhmut) and Ivanouske (6 km west of Bakhmut).
However, Yevgeny Prigozin, head of the Wagner Group, a private Russian mercenary company, criticized the Russian Ministry of Defense’s announcement that it had made progress on Bakhmut only falsely portrayed the retreat as the acquisition of a new position.
A prominent Russian military blogger also complained that the Russian military now has to respond to the actions of the Ukrainian forces. This suggests that Russian forces are losing initiative in the region despite limited Ukrainian counterattacks in Bahmut, the US think tank Institute for War Studies (ISW) analyzed in a report titled “Russian Offensive Assessment Date 17”.
