Devastation and Recovery: Acapulco After Hurricane Otis

The previous report showed 39 deaths, most of them by drowning. The casualty count was slow following the hurricane knocked out telecommunications and electricity, which were gradually restored over the weekend.

Significant material damage

Arriving Wednesday morning classified in category 5, the highest on the Saffir-Simpson scale, Hurricane Otis caused significant destruction in Acapulco, a city of nearly 780,000 inhabitants, where stores and supermarkets were elsewhere been looted while waiting for help.

The federal government has counted more than 10,000 homes having suffered more or less serious damage in this seaside resort which lives mainly from tourism, one of the most famous in Latin America.
