Rabindra Shau immediately went to the scene of the accident after being told by the devastating disaster heard in India. The 53-year-old’s son was one of the passengers on the crashed Coromandel Express train. “Please help me find my son, at least his dead body,” he cried desperately, as reported by The Guardian. Two passenger trains and one freight train were involved in the accident on Friday, the local television station NDTV reported.
Sheikh Zakir Hussain also tried to find out what had happened to his older brother, his son and three of his neighbors, all of whom were on their way to Chennai. “When I heard about the accident, I tried to reach my brother and nephew, but their phones were off,” he says. So far he does not know what happened to his relatives and acquaintances. “At the scene of the accident I saw many dead people and hundreds of lifeless faces – but they were not among them.”
Survivors tell of terrible scenes
Asian News International was able to speak to a survivor. “I’ve never seen anything so horrible,” he describes the gruesome scenes. “My son was killed in the collision. He was 26 years old and had two children, »mourns a mother. Another survivor told an Indian TV station that he first heard a terrible crash and then people fell from the upper compartments. “When I jumped off the train, there were people everywhere screaming for help. There were injured people everywhere. I want to forget all that quickly.”
More than 280 people lost their lives.
After the serious train accident, rescue workers did not find any other survivors on Saturday. As of 10 p.m. Friday night, casualties were still being recovered, Odisha Fire and Emergency Department director Sudhanshu Sarangi told the AP. After that, only bodies were found in the rubble. The accident, in which two passenger trains derailed southwest of Kolkata, cost the lives of more than 280 people. Hundreds more were injured.
Premier announces consequences
After the serious train accident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the consequences. “Those responsible will be severely punished,” he said, according to local media such as the “Hindustan Times” on Saturday when visiting the scene of the accident and injured people in a hospital.
