Multiple tornadoes ripped through Mississippi overnight, killing one person and injuring nearly two dozen, authorities said.
State emergency workers were still working with counties Monday morning to assess damage from the storms in which high temperatures and hail in some areas accompanied the tornadoes. The death and injuries were reported by officials in Jasper County in eastern Mississippi. In a news release Monday morning, the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said more than 49,000 homes in the center of the state were without power.
Gov. Tate Reeves said the tornadoes hit Jasper County and Rankin County, which borders the capital city of Jackson. Emergency teams were conducting search and rescue missions and assessing damage, deploying drones in some areas because it was impossible to reach them by vehicle due to downed power lines.
Tens of thousands of people in Hinds County were still without power Monday morning following strong winds hit the state early Friday.

Reeves said the state is opening command centers and shelters for those displaced by severe weather.
Forecasters warned people celebrating Father’s Day outdoors to take precautions amid temperatures hovering around 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) prompting more heat warnings across much of the southern United States, they unleashed severe thunderstorms that knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of people from Oklahoma to Mississippi, and produced gusty winds that raised wildfire risks in Arizona and New Mexico.
A suspected tornado passed near Scranton, Arkansas, early Sunday morning, destroying chicken coops and toppling trees onto homes, the National Weather Service reported. There were no immediate reports of serious injuries.
In Florida, the weather service issued another heat advisory Sunday, this time primarily for the Keys. Forecasters said numbers on the heat index — which combines high temperatures and oppressive humidity — might reach 108 to 112 Fahrenheit (42 to 45 degrees Celsius) in places like Key Largo, Marathon and Key West.
