Devastating rains in India leave thousands affected

Devastating rains for two consecutive days in several southern states India have plunged the region into chaos, with roads, towns and crops partially or completely destroyed, leaving thousands of people affected, officials said Monday.

Southern regions of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have been hit hardest by the heavy rains, caused by the remnants of a cyclone that formed in the Arabian Sea, leaving record levels of rainfall, while regional governments are stepping up their response efforts to help those affected.

“The state government is providing all possible support to those affected by the heavy rains of the last two days. We are taking all necessary steps in this regard. Ministers and senior officials are ready to provide immediate relief,” Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu said in a message on X.

According to Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, there have been deaths, but authorities have not yet been able to determine the exact number of deaths in both regions. However, local media put the death toll at 27.

In Andhra Pradesh state, authorities have so far rescued around 600 affected people, while in Telangana they have relocated more than 13,000, the Times of India reported on Monday.
