DIn a statement to MAP, the President of the Commission, Brika Beltamer, estimated that the toll from the Mediterranean storm should increase in the coming days, fearing “several thousand” missing.

Rescue operations carried out by specialized teams continue to search for missing people in the affected areas, she added.

For his part, the president of the international organization for cooperation and relief in Libya, Jamal El Mabrouk affirmed that the Libyan authorities will announce next week the official figures of the deaths as well as the estimated cost of the reconstruction of the stricken city.

Uncertainties remain over the storm’s death toll, he noted, noting that around 37,000 residents of the city (population around 100,000) have been displaced to neighboring areas, while 20,000 people are affected. disappeared.

Despite the different types of assistance Derna has received by land and air, the city still needs specialized teams to recover the bodies, insisted the head of the NGO.

In this sense, the World Meteorological Organization estimated that most of the thousands of deaths in the floods in eastern Libya “might have been avoided”.

“With better coordination, authorities might have issued warnings and emergency management services might have evacuated people, and we might have avoided most of the human losses,” lamented Petteri Taalas, secretary general of WMO during a press briefing Thursday in Geneva.

Following this natural disaster, the Libyan authorities requested the opening of an investigation to provide accountability and elucidate the causes of the collapse of the two Derna dams.

Located in the north-east of Libya on the edge of the Mediterranean, Derna is divided into two parts by Wadi Derna, the level of which increased considerably due to storm Daniel, which led to the collapse of the two dams of the city and caused deadly floods.
