A landslide has killed 22 people and left 73 missing in a village in Vietnam’s Lao Cai province, state media reported, the latest example of the typhoon’s deadly impact.
More than two days after its passage, Vietnam is still struggling with the effects of Yagi, which lashed the northern part of the country on Saturday and Sunday with rain and winds of more than 150 kilometers per hour.
Residents reported flooding unprecedented in decades as far away as the capital Hanoi, where the rising Red River forced hundreds of people from their homes.
“I didn’t think the waters would rise so fast (…) It’s the worst flood I’ve seen with my eyes,” said Nguyen Tran Van, who has lived near the riverbanks in Hanoi for 15 years.
“If the water level had risen a little more it would have been very difficult for us to leave,” explained the 41-year-old office worker, who moved his furniture upstairs to avoid getting wet.
Vietnamese authorities have announced a total of 143 dead and 58 missing, without however clarifying whether this count includes the victims of the landslide in Lao Cai.
Flooding also affected regions of Myanmar, Laos and Thailand.
In Vietnam, social media posts yesterday showed the desperation of people trapped on rooftops waiting for rescuers to remove them to safety.
Sixteen provinces and cities are still threatened by landslides and flash floods, although several media reported that waters have begun to recede in some mountainous areas.
In Hanoi, hit by the worst flooding since 2008, according to state media, police are trying to confirm that houses near the banks are indeed empty.
“All residents must leave,” a local police official told AFP. “We bring them to public buildings that have been turned into temporary shelters or are hosted by relatives. A lot of rain has fallen and the water level is rising fast,” he noted.
At the same time, in northern Thailand, a rescue operation is underway for 9,000 families trapped by rising water levels, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said.
Two people died in a landslide in Chiang Mai province in the north, and two others died in unclear circumstances in Chiang Rai province, also in northern Thailand.
In neighboring Laos, state media reported that at least one person had died in the floods.
Water levels in some swollen rivers in Luang Prabang province, also in the north, have reached alarming levels, according to reports.
Houses and shops in the provincial capital, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, have been flooded, the Lao Post reported.
In Myanmar, rains have caused significant flooding in the country’s eastern border town of Tachileik with Thailand, causing problems with telephone communications, according to local newspapers and eyewitnesses.
Before hitting Vietnam, typhoon Yagi had crossed southern China and the Philippines, leaving behind at least 24 dead and dozens injured.
According to a study published in July, hurricanes in the region are now forming closer to shore, strengthening faster and staying over land longer due to climate change.
