Heavy rains in Côte d’Ivoire have killed 30 people since early April, reflecting a particularly intense rainy season, Ivorian government spokesman Amadou Coulibaly said on Wednesday.

“The heavy rains that have been falling since April 2023 have caused loss of life and significant material damage”, affirmed Mr. Coulibaly during the report of the Council of Ministers.

“As of July 10, we unfortunately deplore 30 deaths, including 22 in Abidjan”the economic capital, particularly affected by intense episodes of rain, he added.

Precarious constructions in flood-prone areas, inhabited by poor populations, are legion in this constantly growing metropolis.

On Wednesday, Amadou Coulibaly assured that faced with this “alarming situation” the government was going to “strengthen the pre-positioning of relief in risk areas” and continue the “destruction” informal housing in these areas.
