Tripoli: The bodies of 6000 people who died following the lightning flood in the North African country of Libya have been recovered. The death toll is expected to exceed 10,000. The Libyan city of Derna was the worst affected by Sunday’s flooding caused by Storm Daniel. About 10,000 people are yet to be found.
The collapse of two dams near Derna added to the scale of the disaster. A quarter or more of the city of Derna was swept away by the flood. Buildings, vehicles and people were swept away into the sea.
Rescue efforts are complicated in politically divided Libya.

Many countries have offered help to deal with the disaster. Rescue teams sent by Turkey and the UAE are carrying out rescue operations in eastern Libya. The UN estimates that tens of thousands of people have been displaced in eastern Libya alone. France has also promised to send a field hospital to Libya within 48 hours to help flood victims. The Algerian Foreign Ministry also announced that it had sent eight planes containing food, medical supplies, clothing and tents. Countries like Egypt, France, Iran, Italy, Qatar, Tunisia, the United Nations and the United States have offered help.

All major roads leading to Derna city were damaged in the flood, making rescue operations difficult. Derna is a city of over 100,000 people. Storm Daniel hit eastern Libya on the 10th of this month. The coastal towns of Jabal Al Akhdar and Benghazi are completely devastated. The eastern cities of Benghazi, Sousse, Derna and Al Marj have also been affected by lightning floods.
