Heavy rains caused “life-threatening” flooding in New York state on Sunday, washing away bridges and turning streets into raging rivers, prompting the governor to declare a state of emergency.
A woman was killed trying to get out of her Hudson Valley home with her dog when it was swept away by a flash flood, according to local media reports.
Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency in Orange County, northwest of New York City, and in Ontario County, in the center of the state. Rainfall of up to 200 millimeters created “life-threatening conditions due to flash flooding,” Hochul explained.
“We are close to a critical point in this climatic event,” added the official.
His office reported that by Sunday night more than 12,000 users had no power.
Heavy rains washed out roads and left people stranded in their vehicles and inside their homes.
The National Weather Service (NWS) reported that it received “multiple reports of significant flooding and vehicle entrapment in eastern Orange County.”
By 8:00 p.m. (2400 GMT), roads were closed in at least five counties, including Westchester, north of New York City and bordering the Hudson River.
Governor Hochul’s office said more storms are expected on Monday.
“Excessive rain from slow-moving thunderstorms may continue to cause moderate to isolated river flooding between tonight and Monday,” it added.
