Nothing remains of the façade of the Ranches school in Vernier. Several classrooms were also destroyed following the fire which broke out on Tuesday around 11.15 p.m. Geneva (SIS), notes not without horror the importance of the disaster. It will indeed take ninety minutes for the men of the fire to bring the flames under control. They will then spend the whole night on site in order to secure the premises.
Many classes in this primary school located at rue du Village 6 were completely destroyed.

Since 11:30 p.m., Verniolan administrative adviser Martin Staub has been in shock. The start of the school year, which concerns some 400 pupils, is clearly compromised given the extent of the damage: “The building, which dates from the 1970s, had been renovated 5 years ago. From tomorrow, we will have to find alternatives for the students, consider containers, temporary places, we have no choice. We are doomed to succeed.”
17 volunteer firefighters from the municipality were also mobilized.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown. But on the spot, the police are investigating. Among them, inspectors from the minors brigade. “We didn’t see anyone setting the fire,” says a young man from the town who shows a video of the start of the fire on his phone. We see flames that from the ground have reached the roof on the second floor.

Despite the smell and the smoke, dozens of onlookers watched the firefighters intervene until 1:30 a.m. The SIS mobilized six vehicles and an ambulance. The 17 volunteer firefighters in the town also pulled three out of their truck. First Lieutenant Nicolas Millot tells us that one of his men was wounded in the hand during the intervention. The person was taken to La Tour Hospital.
The executive of the firefighters looks at his colleagues who are watering the roof: “With this type of recent covering, the fire quickly spread over the entire width of the facade. Window panes shattered on two floors. I dare not imagine the scene if it had been an apartment building.
Firefighters spent the entire night on the spot in order to secure the scene as best as possible.
