A violent fire completely destroyed Château Baudoux in Jumet last night. It is a historical monument, witness to the Carole industrial past of the 19th century which thus disappears.
The firefighters who arrived on site around 3 a.m. were unable to do anything. Château Baudoux had been abandoned for years and regularly squatted. It is also towards this avenue that research into the causes of the fire might be directed. 3 firefighters were slightly injured during the intervention and despite all the efforts of the fire crew, the castle was completely destroyed.
Château Baudoux is quite a symbol. It had already been set on fire but a very long time ago, exactly on March 26, 1886. That day, thousands of workers from the Jumet-Hamendes glassworks, angry following a reduction in their wages imposed by their boss, Eugène Baudoux, had set fire to the castle. He was the symbol of employers and one of the targets of a 10-day revolt which would engulf the entire Charleroi region.
With this fire and the undoubtedly definitive destruction of Château Baudoux, one of the last vestiges of the industrial bourgeoisie of Charleroi disappeared.
