At least 296 people died and hundreds were injured following a strong earthquake that shook Morocco on Friday night, according to the country’s Ministry of the Interior.
The 6.8 magnitude earthquake caused damage to buildings in some cities and caused some people to evacuate properties from Rabat to Marrakech.
Residents of the affected areas posted videos on social media showing some buildings turned into rubble, as well as damaged parts of the famous red walls that surround the old city of Marrakech.
Tourists and other visitors posted videos of people evacuating restaurants in Marrakech while music plays in the background.
What was the earthquake in Morocco like?
According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred at 11:11 p.m. (2211 GMT).
The epicenter of the tremor occurred in the Atlas Mountains, approximately 43.5 miles south of Marrakech.
The USGS estimated it occurred at a depth of 11 miles, while Morocco’s seismic agency placed it 5 miles below the surface.
The earthquake was felt as far away as Portugal and Algeria, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere and Algeria’s Civil Defense agency, which is overseeing the emergency response.
