Many people were still awake following the heat of the day, enjoying the cool evening hours, when the earthquake occurred. Otherwise, the magnitude 6.8 quake would probably have claimed even more victims in Marrakech and other cities and villages in central Morocco. But even so, according to the government, at least 2,000 deaths were counted in the Atlas Mountains and neighboring regions by midday on Saturday. More than 2,000 people were injured, some seriously, according to figures from the Moroccan Interior Ministry on Sunday night. The full extent of the catastrophe will only become clear over time. The quake on Saturday night was the deadliest in Morocco in several decades
