The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said on Saturday evening that the fighting in Sudan has killed more than 1,000 people and injured more than 12,000.
Ghebreyesus added on Twitter that the fighting, which has entered its fourth month, has also led to the displacement of more than 3 million people, and to shortages of water, electricity, medicine and health care.
Earlier on Saturday, the United Nations High Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Martin Griffiths, said Saturday that, three months into the crisis, “frontlines have become entrenched, making it even more difficult to reach the millions of people who need urgent humanitarian assistance.”
And he renewed his call for ensuring the safe passage of aid, adding: “We cannot replenish the stock of food, water and medicine if the terrible looting of this stock continues.”
On April 15, fighting broke out between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces. Over the past three months, not a single day has passed for the people of Khartoum without their homes being shaken by fighting and bombing.
In this context, witnesses said in northwestern Khartoum that “clashes with all kinds of weapons” took place on Saturday, the day following violent battles Friday, which led to the rise of thick clouds of black smoke in more than one area.
Others reported that marches of the Rapid Support Forces targeted the largest military hospital in the capital, noting that most of the health facilities located in combat zones are out of service. The Health Ministry said four civilians were killed and four others were “severely wounded” in the attack.
