According to police, at least 18 people were killed in a bomb attack in Somalia‘s capital Mogadishu. Fighters from the Islamist terrorist group Al-Shabaab detonated two bombs in the Kahda district, police officer Mohamed Dahir told the German Press Agency. At least ten other people were injured. The bombs were hidden on a road with a popular viewing point, Dahir said.
A group of young people were taking photos there at the time of the attack. Al-Shabaab controls parts of the impoverished country on the Horn of Africa, but has been pushed out of the capital in recent years. In recent months, however, there has been an increase in attacks on government facilities, hotels and restaurants in Mogadishu.
Most recently, ten people were killed in a car bomb explosion in Mogadishu on August 21, while eleven people were killed in a terrorist attack on a restaurant in the capital in mid-August. A few days earlier, terrorists attacked a hotel on the beach – 20 people were killed.

The attack is the latest in a series of deadly bombings carried out by Al-Shabaab, a militant Islamist group linked to Al-Qaeda. The group has been waging a bloody insurgency in Somalia since 2006, seeking to overthrow the government and impose strict Sharia law.
Over the years, Al-Shabaab has been responsible for numerous attacks on civilians, military targets, and government institutions, resulting in thousands of deaths and displacing millions of people. The Somali government has been struggling to contain the growing threat of terrorism in the country, with the help of international partners, including the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). Despite efforts to strengthen security and rebuild the country, Al-Shabaab remains a potent force, able to launch deadly attacks at will.

As the country struggles to rebuild and recover from decades of conflict, it is essential that the global community remains committed to supporting its efforts to tackle the root causes of terrorism and promote lasting peace.
In the face of such senseless violence, it is important to remember the human cost of terrorism and to stand in solidarity with the people of Somalia, who have borne the brunt of Al-Shabaab’s brutality for far too long.
