DOZENS of people were killed in an attack by the militant group Boko Haram in northeast Nigeria. The terrorist group attacked a village and burned shops and homes on Sunday (1/9) afternoon.
“About 150 suspected Boko Haram terrorists armed with rifles and RPGs (rocket-propelled grenades) attacked Mafa ward on over 50 motorcycles,” Yobe State police spokesman Dungus Abdulkarim told Al Jazeera on Wednesday (September 4).
“They killed many people and burned many shops and houses. We have not yet ascertained the actual number of people killed in the attack,” he said.
Abdulkarim added that the attack was in retaliation for the killing of two suspected Boko Haram members by local residents.
Yobe is one of three states on the front lines of a 15-year insurgency by Boko Haram and other militant groups that has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced more than 2 million.
The armed groups strengthened their positions by joining criminal groups known as bandits. They attacked villages, killed and kidnapped residents, and burned houses after looting them.

Officials said efforts were ongoing to ascertain the number of people killed in Mafa. “It is confirmed that at least 81 people were killed in the attack,” Bulama Jalaluddeen said.
“Fifteen bodies have been buried by their relatives. In addition, an unknown number of the dead were taken and buried by their relatives before the arrival of the troops. Many people are still missing and their whereabouts are unknown,” he continued.
A military official who accompanied the Yobe military commander to Mafa said the route to the village had been rigged with explosives that were defused by troops. “We recovered 37 bodies and took them to Babangida General Hospital,” said the official, who declined to be named because he was not authorized to speak to the media.
Modu Mohammed, who lives in Mafa, said several other residents were missing and the death toll was more than 100. “Some bodies are still in the bushes,” he said. (Z-2)
