According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred at 11:11 a.m., with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8. Morocco’s National Seismic Surveillance and Warning Network rated the earthquake at 7 on the Richter scale.
Variations in early measurements are common, although either reading would be the strongest in Morocco since 1960, when a magnitude 5.8 earthquake near Agadir caused thousands of deaths.

Friday’s quake was centered in the Atlas Mountains, south of Marrakech and west of Oukaimeden, a popular ski resort. It was also located near Tubqal, the highest peak in North Africa.

Residents of Morocco posted videos showing some buildings turned into rubble. Tourists and others posted videos of people evacuating restaurants in Marrakech while music plays in the background.
