FRANKFURT (dpa-AFX) – Deutsche Bank will waive redundancies until the end of September in the conflict between the restructuring of its retail bank and the closure of Postbank branches. “In the spirit of constructive discussions, Deutsche Bank will extend until September 30, 2024 the exclusion of economic redundancies for employees subject to the collective agreement in the field of retail banking in Germany,” said the establishment Thursday in response to a question.

Verdi and the Deutsche Bank Employees’ Association (DBV) have agreed with Deutsche Bank on negotiations starting in January on a future package. According to the union’s indications, the discussions should be completed by the end of March.

Deutsche Bank, of which Postbank is a part, announced at the end of October that it would close up to 250 of Postbank’s current 550 branches by mid-2026. The head of private clients, Claudio de Sanctis, had said the job cuts were “inevitable”. Verdi has repeatedly called on employees to take protest actions. The unions further demanded an extension of dismissal protection, which was initially due to expire at the end of January 2024.

“The agreement just reached and the commitment to protection against layoffs constitute an important signal for retail banking employees in Germany and a good basis for future negotiations,” said Jan Duscheck, Verdi’s negotiator. “In this context, job security and the long-term prospects for retail banking employees of both brands – Deutsche Bank and Postbank – are at the forefront for us.” DBV National President Stephan Szukalski also welcomed the agreement.

Verdi is also demanding a salary increase of 15.5 percent for the approximately 12,000 employees of the Deutsche Bank group who have signed a collective agreement for the postal bank, with at least a salary increase of 600 euros and an increase in compensation of training of 250 euros./mar/DP/jha
