Detroit Tigers fire general manager Al Avila

The Detroit Tigers have severed ties with operations manager Al Avila, who spent the past eight years in that role.

After a failed season by Detroit Tigersthe high command made the decision that the future of the team might not continue in the hands of the veteran Al Avila, who spent the last 21 years being part of the office of said organization.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports that Detroit Tigers decided that veteran Sam Menzin is the team’s new “day-to-day” general manager, removing Avila once and for all. Avila came to the Detroit Tigers in 2002 when he was named assistant to GM Dave Dombrowski, while in 2015 he was given the role of general manager.

Tigers President and CEO Christopher Ilitch said in a statement, “Once I decided to make a change, I sat down with Avila and I thanked him for his almost 22 years of service to our organization,” said Christopher.

It should be noted that the Cuban To Avila he was the only Latin American with that high command in an MLB franchise.
