In Switzerland, the National Council has just accepted a tax on vapers; in Geneva, you can no longer smoke near schools; in Canada, prevention messages will be printed directly on cigarettes. What works to deter young people from smoking? Insights from Karine Gallopel-Morvan, tobacco control policy specialist.

The “deterrent cigarette” seems to be a good lead for this professor at the School of Advanced Studies in Public Health. “Tobacco manufacturers have worked a lot on the design of cigarettes, in particular to attract young people and women. There are pink, long, pearly ones… The idea is to counter this marketing by imposing colors that are not very pleasant or health warning messages”. And on the cigarette, the message cannot be hidden like on a packet.

Every minute in the world, 10 million people smoke a cigarette and 15 die from tobacco. In Switzerland, a third of 15-25 year olds already smoke and the first category of smokers are men aged 25 to 34.
