Deteriorating Safety and Accessibility at Verviers Car Park: A Hub for Squatting, Drug Deals, and Violence

For the moment, only the pedestrian access via a stairwell which gives on the rue du College has been condemned. Since Wednesday, it is no longer possible to use it to get down from the car park or to go back up to pick up your car.

“It had become a real cut-throat and people who park their car preferred not to go through there to go find it”insists the acting mayor of Verviers, Alexandre Loffet (PS).

But it is the entire car park which, without major change, is subject to closure, which has not (yet?) been implemented (the shutters of the access ramps have not yet been lowered) , following a request notified by the acting mayor. This is justified, explains Alexandre Loffet, by the total insecurity that reigns there: “This building is completely uncleaned, unsupervised and unchecked, and is frequented by people who have no business being there.”

It has become a place for squatting but also for dealing drugs (a regular user tells us that he finds syringes on the ground there every time he passes by). Also a place of “settling scores”adds in a sibylline way the acting mayor, probably referring to the pitched fight between two rival gangs which raged there recently and which a user also reported to us.
