Ukraine is attacking areas behind the front lines with drones and rockets. According to the Institute for the Study of War, the attacks are increasingly wearing down Moscow’s troops. Dissatisfaction is also growing among Russian war bloggers, they say.

According to the US think tank Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Ukrainian attacks on rear areas of the front are increasingly damaging the morale of Russian troops. The constant attacks threaten the ability of Moscow’s units to defend themselves in many important areas of the front, writes the ISW in its current situation report.

According to US experts, Russian units in southern Ukraine in particular suffer from poor morale. Declining will to fight might accelerate if a pressured unit collapses. This creates the risk of panic, which might quickly spread to other Russian associations.

In previous reports, the ISW pointed out that Russia was unable to rotate depleted units from the front, which indicated a lack of reserves. Should troop morale drop further, it might have a significant impact on the stability of the Russian front, which Ukrainian forces might exploit, the institute notes. Maintaining the morale of its front-line units is therefore essential for Moscow.

According to the ISW, the attacks in the rear are also causing dissatisfaction and criticism of the military leadership in the Russian war blogger scene. “Some Russian military bloggers expressed anger at the recent Ukrainian attacks on the Kerch Strait Bridge and called on Russian forces to target the families, homes and other belongings of Ukrainian decision-makers to prevent further Ukrainian attacks on rear areas “, according to the ISW.
