A Sherbrooke scientist with Lyme disease hopes to soon patent a reliable test to detect Lyme disease. To finance his research, François-Olivier Mc Duff produces and sells vinegar in nearly a hundred points of sale in Quebec.
May is Lyme Disease Prevention Month.
This infection is wreaking more and more havoc in Quebec, particularly in Estrie, and people affected often have great difficulty obtaining a diagnosis.
Bitten by a tick in 2005 during a trip to the United States, François-Olivier Mc Duff himself had to wait fifteen years before having a clear diagnosis.
The pharmacologist and biochemist founded the company Raspberry Scientific.
In her Sherbrooke laboratories, she is trying to invent a reliable test to detect Lyme disease and other infections transmitted by insects.
“We have developed a platform that makes it possible to manufacture tests on which we can present up to 250,000 antigenic targets. So 250,000 markers which make it possible to follow the patient’s immune system and the evolution of his disease”, indicated Mr. Mc Duff, who hopes to be able to obtain his patent by the end of the year.
To finance his research, the Sherbrooke resident created Vinaigrerie Mc Duff.
In addition, throughout the month of May, part of the proceeds will go to the Association québécoise de la Maladie de Lyme.
“Of course we will do prevention and support for sick people, but some of these donations will go back to research, mentions the president of the association, Caren Leblanc. Quebec is one of the biggest centers of Lyme disease in the world and we don’t have the resources to deal with it.”
