A total of 42 sick participants – as well as 28 healthy participants as a control group – were regularly tested for the study.
In addition, before the study, the researchers ensured that none of the participants had a mouth, tongue or dental disease or had been sick in the previous weeks.
Result: Heart failure test groups with different bacteria content
The result: The heart failure patients had the same types of microorganisms in their tongue coating. Healthy people also had matching microbes – but there was no overlap in bacterial levels between the two test groups.
Dr. Yuan classifies the study results as follows: “More research is needed – but our results suggest that tongue microbes might help in the broad early detection, diagnosis and long-term monitoring of heart failure.” The proven connection that links the microorganisms in the tongue coating to heart function needs to be further investigated, according to the research team.
