If ENT cancer is diagnosed in time, it can be cured in 9 cases out of 10. The Oscar Lambret center in Lille encourages people to consult in case of symptoms. These are easy to recognize, we explain everything to you.

The Hauts-de-France region is the most affected by cancer in France. The number of cases and the mortality rate are higher than the national average for many cancers: “oesophagus, lip-mouth-pharynx, colon-rectum in both sexes, as well as prostate, lung, liver and bladder in men and breast in women”, indicates the site vie-publique.fr.

Faced with this alarming observation, the Oscar Lambret center in Lille is launching an appeal to invite patients to be tested in case of doubt. The focus is on ENT cancers (oto-rhino-laryngologique), also called cancers of the upper aerodigestive tract (VADS).

This includes cancers of the mouth (lips, gums, jaw, palate, tongue), pharynx (tonsil and throat), larynx (vocal cords), salivary glands, nose, sinuses and neck lymph nodes.

It’s the fifth the most common cancer in France, indicates the Oscar Lambret center on its website. Men are much more affected than women: 70% once morest 30% for women.

The first risk factors are the consumption of tobacco and chronic alcohol. 3 out of 4 ENT cancers “sare due to these factors, even with low consumption”.

For the second year in a row, the Oscar Lambret center wants to encourage people to consult in case of doubt because if ENT cancer is detected at an “early stage”, it can be cured in 9 out of 10 cases.

To find out if you have symptoms, apply the “1 for 3 rule”. If a person has had any of the following symptoms for 3 weeks, they should see a doctor:

  • A sore mouth, throat, teeth
  • A broken voice and hoarseness
  • Difficulty swallowing, lump in throat
  • A lump in the neck
  • Bleeding, a ball in the mouth, especially if the patient is a smoker.

15,000 people are affected each year by these cancers. Between 2007 and 2016, it was in Hauts-de-France that the incidence rate was highest for lip-mouth-pharynx cancer in both men and women.

These data are available on the Public Health France website.

The most recent data from the Regional Health Agency (ARS) were recorded between 2006 and 2013. During this period, the region experienced excess cancer-related mortality 18% higher than the average for France. For ENT cancers, excess male mortality in Hauts-de-France was nearly 60%, which then represented a differential of 50% with the rest of France.

At the time, the territories with the highest cancer mortality in Hauts-de-France were located on an axis linking Béthune-Bruay to Valenciennes (surplus often close to +30%). The Boulonnais had a surplus of 28% and 20% in Saint-Quentin in the Aisne.
