Baierbrunn (ots) – Introduction: We are all afraid of developing cancer and this risk cannot be eliminated either, but we can do something to reduce it through regular check-ups and our lifestyle. Marco Chwalek reports:
Speaker: “Detected early, banned early”, one can actually say with many cancer diseases. Because there are check-ups that can save lives, reports the pharmacy magazine “Diabetes Ratgeber”. Editor-in-Chief Anne-Bärbel Köhle explains to us why early detection is so important:
O-Ton Anne-Bärbel Köhle: 19 seconds
“First of all, the health insurance companies pay for the cancer screening examination, of course, from a certain age or from a certain predisposition. And you shouldn’t delay it, you should definitely make use of it. Because there are good early detection options for some types of cancer, for example breast cancer and colon cancer .”
Speaker: Why did you just mention colon cancer screening?
O-Ton Anne-Bärbel Köhle: 21 seconds
“Because the risk of dying from colon cancer really drops dramatically with a colonoscopy. The doctor can, for example, identify polyps that can be easily removed during the examination, but if detected too late, they can lead to cancer. Man no need to worry before the exam either. I just had it done recently, it’s actually completely painless.”
Speaker: Is there anything else that can be done to reduce the risk of cancer apart from the early detection tests that are offered?
O-Ton Anne-Bärbel Köhle: 22 seconds
“Yes, of course. Risk factors are, for example, being overweight, not exercising enough and also smoking. You can change all of that. Well, if you eat healthily, with lots of whole grain products and vegetables and are active in everyday life, you have already gained a lot. The problem is that type 2 diabetes has a higher risk of cancer, so these people should take extra care of themselves.”
Moderation: The “Diabetes Counselor” urgently appeals to us to go for cancer screening, because it can save our lives.
