Atlanta, USA (CNN) – The Russian-appointed mayor of the Ukrainian city of Nova Kakhova, Vladimir Leontyev, described the destruction of parts of the Kakhova hydroelectric power station as a “serious terrorist act” on Tuesday, while a Ukrainian-appointed Kherson official accused Moscow of being behind Explosion of the Nova Kakhova Dam.

Leontiev said: “The attacks on the Kakhova hydroelectric power station destroyed the gate valves, which led to an uncontrollable spill of water.”

“There is no need to leave Nova Kakhova for the time being yet,” added the Moscow-appointed mayor.

Ukraine’s appointed head of the Kherson Military Administration, Oleksandr Prokudin, said the evacuation in the “risk zone” around Nova Kakhova Dam in Ukraine had begun.

Prokudin said, “The Russian army committed another terrorist act. It blew up the Kakhovka power station, and the water will reach a critical level within five hours… Evacuation in the danger zone has begun.”

Prokudin assured citizens in his post on Telegram that all services are working, including the police and the emergency service.

The official called on citizens to “collect their most needed documents and belongings and wait for the evacuation buses.”

Prokudin accused Russia of blowing up the Kakhova Dam in a previous post on Telegram.

A drone video late Monday showed a torrent of water gushing out of a large hole in the Nova Kakhovka Dam in eastern Ukraine.
