Liverpool defeated Brighton 3-2 in the round of 16 of the English League Cup after a very exciting end and secured the right to play in the quarter-finals. The hosts fought until the very end, but there was no time to make up for the losses. Cody Gakpo was extremely effective in this match, scoring two goals. Jakub Moder also got his chance from the first minute. How did the Polish representative do?
A quiet start
Brighton has definitely caught the wind in recent weeks, especially with two important wins in the league – against Tottenham and Newcastle United. This time, Liverpool, who are second only to Manchester City in the league, appeared at their stadium. The Reds drew 2-2 with Arsenal in the last round of the Premier League. Both teams played with slightly more reserve squads for the League Cup match. Jakub Moder also got his chance from the first minute.
Line-ups of both teams:
Brigthon: Steele – Kadioglu (46′ Estupinan), Igor, Van Hecke (68′ Veltman), Lamptey – Wieffer, Moder (68′ Hinshelwood), Enciso (76′ Welbeck) – Adingra, Gruda (75′ Mitoma), Ferguson
Liverpool: Jaros – Bradley, Quansah (92′ Konate), Gomez, Robertson – Morton ( 64′ Mac Allister), Endo (64′ Nyonyi), Jones – Diaz, Szoboszlai (71′ Nunez), Gakpo (71′ Salah)

The hosts clearly started this match worse than their rivals. During the first minutes, there was a lot of nervousness in their performance, and this only fueled Liverpool’s individual attacks. Arne Slot also did not field the first suit, so his players’ opportunities were not immediately exploited.
Despite a poor start, Brighton’s right defender had a great opportunity in the 13th minute. Tariq Lamptey started a counterattack, received the ball at the sixteenth meter, but lost to Jaros in the one-on-one duel. It was also quite a serious mistake in the visitors’ defense. There was little response from the Reds, only in the 19th minute, after an interesting action and a good cross from Gakpo, Diaz passed the ball in the penalty area. After a very exciting and spectacular first quarter of the game, there was clearly a moment of stagnation and the pace dropped significantly.
Only in the 33rd minute did Liverpool make a good move. Good play by Robertson for the fifth meter, but Szoboszlai failed to take advantage of it, and then Diaz was unable to finish the ball. Robertson himself became more and more involved in the offensive, which resulted in another attack five minutes later, but this time his shot was saved by Steele. Even though we saw interesting opportunities on both sides, neither Liverpool nor the Seagulls were able to score. That’s why the fans gathered in the stands were waiting for goals in the second part of the match.

The Reds’ brilliant start
It seemed that after an even first part, we would continue to watch a similar spectacle. However, Cody Gakpo had a completely different idea. In the 46th minute, the Dutchman received the ball on the left side He beat the rival goalkeeper with an amazing shot from distance. A great, but above all, incredibly strong shot meant that Liverpool opened the scoring in the match. He celebrated the goal by showing… nail-driving, because he also sent a nail into the net.
Brighton came close to equalizing just 180 seconds later. Simon Adingra had a great header, but Vitzeslav Jaros made a great robinsonade and parried the ball to the post. Arne Slot’s team, which is doing very well this season, had to be careful because the hosts definitely felt blood after conceding a goal. In the 53rd minute, Gruda sent a very dangerous shot that was slightly off target.
In the 62nd minute, Brighton made a terrible mistake after a corner kick, which caused the Reds to launch a three-on-one counterattack. Szoboszlai, however, wasted the situation badly after Gakpo’s pass, and Jason Steele emerged victorious. After such a wasted chance, Gakpo didn’t want to give the ball back and this time he shot it brilliantly at the post from the left side.. Brighton’s goalkeeper had no chance and in the 63rd minute it was 2-0 for the guests.

Brighton definitely took the initiative in this match, looking to make up for the loss. In the 81st minute, after a defensive error, Jaros had problems in goal, which Adingra took advantage of. The hosts made contact, which only heralded the emotions at the very end. The fans also experienced this, but only on the side of Arne Slot’s team, because after the confusion it was Luis Diaz who found the best position in the penalty area. The Colombian gave Liverpool a 3-1 lead in the 85th minute.
However, this was not the end of emotions in this meeting. Lamptey again received the ball near the penalty area, but this time he beat Jaros. in the 90th minute, the hosts returned to this match, gaining contact for the second time. Jarell Quansah was primarily responsible for this goal and Slot did not take any risks in the last minutes – he immediately made a substitution. The hosts tried to fight for a draw and penalties, but Liverpool successfully stole the next seconds. Ultimately, the Reds won the match 3-2.

How did Moder play?
The Polish midfielder played 68 minutes in this match and it cannot be said that it was a poor performance. On the other hand, Moder did not impress for most of his time on the pitch. He certainly showed the classic Polish “center shot”, which could have surprised Jaros. Certainly, with each passing minute it was clear that the Pole was gaining significantly in self-confidence. Fabian Huerzeler certainly received a signal from him that he still aspires to have more chances in the starting lineup. The Pole won a lot of duels, he had the ball quite often, but unfortunately he often lost it.

Liverpool Defeats Brighton 3-2: A Rollercoaster of Emotions!
The air was thick with anticipation as Liverpool clashed with Brighton in the round of 16 of the English League Cup. If you had a betting man close by, you’d expect him to be sweating bullets after a nail-biting finish that had spectators second-guessing their life choices right until the whistle blew. In the end, the Reds edged the Seagulls, securing their spot in the quarter-finals.
A Quiet Start
Brighton had recently found their wings, riding high after victories against Tottenham and Newcastle. Liverpool, sitting just below the mighty Manchester City in the league standings, needed to shake off their prior 2-2 draw with Arsenal. But what followed was not an explosion of goals but an almost apocalyptic silence in the first half. Talk about a party that got off to a rather drab start!
Line-ups of Both Teams:
Brighton: Steele – Kadioglu (46′ Estupinan), Igor, Van Hecke (68′ Veltman), Lamptey – Wieffer, Moder (68′ Hinshelwood), Enciso (76′ Welbeck) – Adingra, Gruda (75′ Mitoma), Ferguson
Liverpool: Jaros – Bradley, Quansah (92′ Konate), Gomez, Robertson – Morton (64′ Mac Allister), Endo (64′ Nyonyi), Jones – Diaz, Szoboszlai (71′ Nunez), Gakpo (71′ Salah)

Liverpool enjoyed a more composed start while Brighton seemed to forget that football requires a bit of coordination. But credit to Brighton’s Lamptey, who promptly reminded us that they were indeed still functional, narrowly missing one-on-one with Liverpool’s keeper. Alas, Liverpool’s defence seemed to channel their inner Harry Houdini, making disappearances at crucial moments but pulling off some miraculous saves—just not willing to share the limelight!
The Reds’ Brilliant Start
Fast forward to the second half, and Cody Gakpo hit the gas pedal. Barely a minute in and BOOM! A rocket from outside the box nestled snugly into the net, leaving the goalkeeper scratching his head. Gakpo celebrated with such panache that you’d think he was auditioning for a role in a nail salon commercial.

Brighton, suddenly jolted into wakefulness, attempted to rally. Adingra almost leveled it with a header that would’ve made an architect proud, but Liverpool’s Jaros turned into Superman with a stunning save. If only he could save my weekend plans as easily!
And then came the madness. With a defensive blunder leading to a Liverpool three-on-one counterattack, Szoboszlai — bless his heart — decided he wanted to be the hero but really turned into the comedy relief, squandering a golden opportunity. But no worries! Gakpo, seeing Szoboszlai’s hesitation, took matters into his own hands and blasted a shot home, doubling Liverpool’s lead!
The Climax of Chaos
But did Brighton roll over? Of course not! After a defensive mix-up, the Seagulls clawed back into the game, pulling it back to 2-1. Then there was a flicker of hope when Adingra made it 3-2 in the dying moments — did someone say dramatic finish? They tried to throw Liverpool off their game, but much like a cat with nine lives, the Reds played down the clock with expert precision. Ultimately, it was a narrow escape from a draw that would have sent both teams into further pandemonium!
How Did Moder Play?
Now, let’s talk about Jakub Moder. The Polish midfielder had his moment, starting off the game but failing to leave a lasting impression. He executed a classic “center shot” that almost ended up in the net, which is like saying a car almost made it to the finish line but ran out of gas halfway. He got valuable minutes on the pitch and with each passing moment seemed to gather his confidence like it was an old sock — useful, but needing a good wash. He was adept in duels, yet wasn’t shy about losing possession. Let’s chalk it down to “work in progress.” That’s modern football for you!
Final Thoughts
In the end, it was Liverpool who triumphed, heading into the quarter-finals with a smirk and a wink. Brighton? They’re taking notes and will surely come back stronger, at least until the next time they forget how to finish. That’s football, isn’t it? A game of moments, errors, and a dash of drama perfect for a late-night comedy show!

Struck back with Adingra finding the net, suddenly making it 2-1 and reigniting hope for the home fans. The tension was palpable as Brighton pushed for an equalizer, determined to capitalize on Liverpool’s occasional lapses in defense.
As the clock ticked towards the 85th minute, Liverpool found themselves in a precarious position. Luis Diaz, lurking in the shadows of the penalty area, managed to seize a moment of confusion among Brighton defenders. His decisive strike restored Liverpool’s two-goal cushion at 3-1, sending the traveling fans into a frenzy and seemingly securing the victory for the Reds.
Last-Minute Drama
Yet, Brighton was not ready to concede defeat. In a dramatic twist during the 90th minute, Lamptey once again made his presence felt, netting another goal for the Seagulls and halving the deficit to 3-2. With the home side reinvigorated, they threw everything at Liverpool in the dying moments of the match in search of a potentially dramatic equalizer.
“The final minutes were a blur,” said one fan later, reflecting on the chaotic crescendo of the match. Liverpool’s defense, acknowledging the threat, tightened their grip, expertly running down the clock and ensuring that Brighton’s last-gasp efforts were thwarted. As the referee blew the whistle, the intense battle concluded with Liverpool escaping with a narrow 3-2 victory, securing their place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.
Notable Performances
As the dust settled, one player who caught the eye was Jakub Moder, the Polish midfielder for Brighton. Playing for 68 minutes, Moder showcased flashes of brilliance that hinted at his potential. Though he struggled with consistency, his winning mentality shone through, striving for more contributions in the midfield. “If he can channel that energy regularly, he may just secure his position in the starting lineup,” remarked an analyst after the match.
Conclusion
This encounter may have been chaotic and nerve-wracking, but it will surely be remembered for the sheer tenacity displayed by both teams. Liverpool’s ability to withstand pressure, coupled with Brighton’s fighting spirit, offered fans a thrilling spectacle. For now, it’s onwards for Liverpool as they set their sights on the quarter-finals, eager to continue their pursuit of silverware this season.
