Despite the Pogacar show, Evenepoel remains confident: “It was a good first test, the next one”

Fourth in the stage, Remco Evenepoel lost a few seconds but he is happy.

While his trainer struggled to get his right arm through the sleeve of his tracksuit, a few hundred meters following the finish line which he had just crossed in fourth position, Remco Evenepoel quenched his thirst and caught his breath.

The Brabançon then analyzed his day, the difficult first of this 57th edition of Tirreno, and in particular the movement he had initiated, following being launched by Julian Alaphilippe on the coast, at the first crossing of the finish line in Bellante where two laps of a local circuit followed.

“We tried to toughen the race“, he explained, referring to the short breakaway which propelled him a few seconds in front of what remained of the peloton, in the company of Pogacar, Ganna and Hindley. “But there was too much headwind on the descent, we mightn’t pick up enough speed. I’m glad we tried that though. If we had worked together a little better, maybe we might have escaped. , but that’s how it is, that’s racing. It would have been a nice move.”
