In recent years, “Dead Island 2” has had to endure various postponements as well as developer changes. As game director David Stenton confirmed, the setting of the successor was never on the brink despite the bumpy development.
As early as 2014, the publisher Deep Silver officially announced the successor to the popular horror action title “Dead Island” for the consoles and the PC.
In the years that followed, “Dead Island 2” made a name for itself with its bumpy development, which not only led to various shifts. The responsible development team was also replaced several times. The sequel was initially created by the “Spec Ops: The Line” makers at Yager.
After the Berlin studio was no longer trusted, Sumo Digital worked intermittently on Dead Island 2 before another developer change resulted in Dambuster Studios taking over the completion of the project.
As the game director responsible for “Dead Island 2” David Stenton confirmed in an interview, the eventful development did not mean that the setting of the successor was in danger.
Developers pursued a clear goal
Instead of thinking regarding a possible new setting, the developers at Dambuster Studios were primarily concerned with an entertaining gaming experience and the goal of making the main gameplay pillars, such as the combat system, as high quality as possible. “I don’t remember there being a lot of discussion regarding doing anything other than Los Angeles. I felt it was important for us to focus on the game…the combat and that includes the setting,” Stenton said.
And further: “Los Angeles is such a fantastic iconic place that we didn’t really feel we had to bring other areas into it. It just gives us so many options… for the game we wanted to make. So there weren’t any big debates.”
