Despite its support for Israel, the White House: We want a ceasefire and an end to the war in Gaza

Washington – White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said that the United States “wants a ceasefire and an end to the war” in the Gaza Strip, and expressed her hope that the Palestinian factions movement will participate in the ceasefire negotiations scheduled to be held on Thursday in Doha.

This came in statements made by the US spokeswoman regarding the assessment of the possible ceasefire in Gaza, during a daily press conference on Wednesday.

Jean-Pierre stressed that the ceasefire negotiations expected to be held in Doha on Thursday are “of great importance,” and expressed her hope that the Palestinian factions would participate in these talks.

“Tomorrow (Thursday) will be an important day. We want a ceasefire. We want to see the end of this war,” she added.

She explained that with the ceasefire, it would be possible for prisoners to return to their homes and for humanitarian aid to be delivered to the Palestinians.

She said her country’s government believes that the recent escalation of tensions between Israel and Iran will decrease with the ceasefire in Gaza.

Israel is anticipating retaliatory responses from Iran and Lebanon following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31, and Tel Aviv’s adoption of the assassination of leader Fouad Shukr in Beirut the previous day.

The spokeswoman reiterated the statements of the US administration, which approved, on Wednesday, the sale of new weapons to Israel worth $20 billion, saying: “We want the tension in the Middle East to calm down.”

She pointed out that officials from the United States and Israel will attend the negotiations in Doha, and they hope that representatives of the Palestinian factions will also be present.

She noted that the White House National Security Council Coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa, Brett McGurk, and CIA Director William Burns “are in the region and doing their best” to resume the stalled talks.

With the mediation of Qatar and Egypt and the participation of the United States, Israel and the Palestinian factions conducted indirect, faltering negotiations for months to conclude a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement.

With American support, Israel has been waging a devastating war on Gaza since October 7, 2023, leaving more than 132,000 Palestinians dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 10,000 missing, amid massive destruction and deadly famine.

In contempt of the international community, Tel Aviv continues the war, ignoring the UN Security Council resolution to stop it immediately, and the International Court of Justice’s orders to take measures to prevent acts of genocide and to improve the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza.
