The minister responsible for tourism, Olivia Grégoire, will unveil this Tuesday the results of the tourist season in France. For now, it is already possible to draw three lessons from a summer marked by inflation, which prompted the French to adapt.

The results of the summer 2023 tourist season are estimated at between 64 and 67 billion euros in revenue, according to Atout France, the agency responsible for promoting France. Foreigners came in droves. The main hypothesis would therefore be that it is thanks to them that the coffers are well filled. As for French vacationers, they have remained more reasonable, inflation obliges.

9 out of 10 French people stayed in France

First, the French have visited restaurants less this summer, confides the Union of trades and industries of the hotel industry to Europe 1. The restaurateurs speak of a drop in turnover attributable to the rise in prices and in high heat.

Regarding the bedtime, holidaymakers spent the night less in hotels this summer, but they favored campsites more. These structures are recording more reservations than in 2022. The reason: to retain their clientele, often from the middle class, they have given up increasing their prices.

“We are in a season that is probably a little better than last year, which is good news since the year was a good season. We passed on inflation quite a bit. If we had increased prices too much, there would have been a collapse in attendance”, explains Nicolas Dayot President of the National Federation of Outdoor Hotels.

Finally, the French left less far from home. Nearly 9 out of 10 stayed in France. The Carigami car rental comparator, for example, recorded a 10% drop in reservations.
