Desjardins Data Theft: Interac Transfers and Claim Compensation Explained

2023-07-14 00:11:15

Several Desjardins customers who have received an Interac transfer in recent days in connection with the “loss of time” claim are puzzled. Some believe in fraud. Others have forgotten the answer to their security question and are worried regarding not being able to receive their due. Here are some answers to help you see more clearly.

What is it regarding ?

As part of the class action in connection with the Desjardins data theft perpetrated in 2019, customers who requested a claim for “loss of time” received compensation by Interac transfer on Tuesday and Wednesday.

This amount is used to compensate for the time they had to spend (and therefore lose) registering with Equifax or researching the consequences of the data leak, for example.

The compensation can go up to $90, for an hourly rate of $18 per hour lost and for a maximum of five hours.

How to receive your due?

“Eligible persons have all received an email to deposit the funds into the account of their choice,” says Jean-Benoît Turcotti, spokesperson for Desjardins. “No text message was sent,” he said.

Be sure to check the sender’s email address, which should be: [email protected]

Unless you have signed up for e-Transfer Autodeposit through your financial institution, you will need to answer a security question. The answer is the one you indicated when you submitted your complaint.

No other information will be requested.

If you requested payment by check, you should receive it within the next few days. Checks will be mailed by July 19.

What if you forgot the answer to your security question?

If you enter an incorrect answer three times, your payment will be blocked.

Beginning Monday, July 17, you can contact RicePoint, the independent fund distribution administrator, at 1-888-886-7164.

To authenticate you, you will be asked for the Claim Number found in the email confirming your eligibility for the settlement. Once your identity has been confirmed, an agent will give you your password. Save it!

A new email to collect your indemnity will be sent to you by August 31.

Is there still time to file a claim?

It is too late to request a claim for lost time: it had to be done before mid-April.

However, there is a second category of complaint for which it is still possible to file a claim. “Individuals who have suffered identity theft can submit a claim until October 20, 2025, with three payment periods that will be issued before January 18 of the years 2024, 2025, 2026,” said Turcotti. “To receive payment by January 18, 2024, an application must be submitted by October 20, 2023,” it says.

As part of this claim, you might receive up to $1,000 if you were indeed the victim of identity theft. You can check if you meet the eligibility criteria by visiting the official Desjardins settlement website.
