the danish designer Michael Flarup another book regarding application icons is released, this time regarding apps developed for macOS, entitled “The macOS App Icon Book”. It is worth remembering that Flarup has already organized another book, released in 2021, which was themed on iOS app icons, so he is now expanding his project.
The book has not yet been effectively published, but the designer, as happened the other time, has already started a campaign on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter, following more than a year of working on the project. The half US$10.788 has already been beaten, although it is still possible to contribute to strengthen the project, which already has more than US$36 mil.
The publication’s content encompasses hundreds of macOS app icons created over more than a decade by developers around the world. “It’s a vibrant journey through the art of desktop app iconography for macOS,” Flarup said. It is, therefore, a historical archive that shows the evolution of icon designs, as well as a source of inspiration for professionals in the field and/or hobbyists.
The icons were meticulously curated until they were included in the book, covering different themes/styles and showing the different versions of each icon, with the modifications that occurred over time. As the publication has not yet been closed, the designer is still accepting icon proposals to integrate the book.
According to the developer, even with the hesitation of ending up spending so much time working on the book, as happened with the four years spent on the first one, the success of the production on iOS app icons made him start the new project. The importance of such an idea was also something that spurred him on.
The idea, therefore, is to make these digital creations less ephemeral and more tangible, preserving them in a physical material. Such an initiative also helps to raise its importance, especially considering that, now, it is regarding apps for macOS, a platform that was the basis for the interfaces of computers that exist today.
The forecast is that the book will be completed in October, with 80% of the work already finished, so that the purchased copies will be printed in November and sent to buyers in January. There will be around 150 pages in a book with dimensions of 200mmx250mm.
If you want to buy the “The macOS App Icon Book”, you can make a contribution to the project on Kickstarter and receive the book as a reward. when paying 29€you will receive a digital copy of the book, while the physical edition of the publication, in hardcover, costs 59€ in this moment of crowdfunding; per 79€you can buy both.
It is also possible to receive physical and digital copies of both the new book and the previous one, the “The iOS App Icon Book”which represents the reward of a contribution of 129€ or of 189€ if you want Flarup’s autograph on the books. In all cases, shipping can be done anywhere in the world.
