Designer imagines landscape mode for the iPhone’s Home screen

Many may not even remember, but there was a time when it was possible to interact with the home screen of iOS with iPhone in landscape mode (horizontal). This feature, introduced by Apple in 2014 with iOS 8, has always been exclusive to Plus models, but ended up being left out with the arrival of devices equipped with Face ID sensors.

As much as the landscape Home screen wasn’t exactly a popular feature, it did have its uses. Applications such as Calendar and Reminders, for example, opened with an extra side column that displayed a greater number of information whenever the user accessed them with the iPhone horizontally.

A new concept developed by the designer Basic Apple Guy, in turn, imagine how the Home screen in landscape mode would be if it was still supported on the latest iPhones, which have much more spacious displays than the old Plus models with the classic Home button. As you can see, its addition would still be possible even with the arrival in notch and the Dynamic Island (Dynamic Island).

The designer’s interpretation for landscape mode includes six columns of apps with four items each. In addition, it also supports widgets, which would automatically reorganize themselves on the screen whenever the user turned the iPhone — just as it already happens in iPadOS.

A Dynamic Island it would remain in the same place as always, hiding the camera and Face ID sensors. Instead of expanding further towards the center of the screen, however, it would be displayed further down to make it more accessible to fingers. The status bar, in turn, was taken to the side of the device, with the clock positioned on the left side and the Control Center icons on the right side.

This “new” view, however, would not only serve to interact with the Home screen in a different way, but also for other multitasking features. As you can see in the image above, the designer also envisioned landscape mode being used to run two apps side by side, in Split View. As with the iPad, it would be possible to choose which side of the screen the applications should open.
