The article discusses the use of 3D printing technology of cementitious hydraulic binder material in the field of green shipbuilding. More particularly the contribution of architectural, environmental, technical and economic performance by this technology particularly suited to the creation of structures such as artificial reefs and devices to combat coastal erosion but also the eco-design of port structures.
The use of mixed structures in 3D printing and reinforced concrete allows the creation of structures with superior ecological and technical performances and even unattainable with conventional constructive methods of prefabrication of reinforced concrete, improving the environmental footprint of the construction while remaining within a framework of economic feasibility.
The adaptation of design and construction to 3D printing will be illustrated through the presentation of a design/construction project for a large-scale artificial marine reef as part of the RECIF’LAB Future Investment Program carried out between 2018 and 2021 in collaboration with the city of Agde.
The innovation presented focuses particularly on the development of an iterative and efficient design methodology allowing the dimensioning of the hydrodynamic stability and the structural strength of mixed 3D material/reinforced concrete structures in the marine environment with significant hydrodynamic thrust forces. and a particularly demanding chemical composition for reinforced concrete, leading to a risk of corrosion of the reinforcements and chemical and biological attacks on the concrete.
Finally, the creation of the structure and its deployment were also innovative, with significant challenges in monitoring manufacturing quality, setting up a phasing and a methodology to guarantee technical feasibility and finally operations. handling on land and at sea to allow deployment in open sea at more than 3 nautical miles and at more than 20 m depth.
