‘He’s the best speed skier.’ The phrase comes from Marco Odermatt and is addressed to his Norwegian ‘best enemy’. And given the performance of the Scandinavian on the Lauberhorn, there is no question of going once morest the words of the Nidwalden.
As so often, the Norwegian got off to a great start with an impeccable Minschkante and an excellent Kernen-S. Until the passage under the bridge, ‘AAK’ did just fine. It was particularly on the top of the track that Marco Odermatt might not compete with his only adversary for the large crystal globe. He thus lost 0.85 in the first 45 seconds of the race, but only 0.03 in the last minute.
The World Cup leader analyzed his race well on the RTS microphone: ‘The light was very bad following Hundschopf and I made a mistake. After that it was better. So yes, the place is good, but the gap with Kilde is too big.’ Mikaela Shiffrin’s companion pocketed his 19th success in the World Cup, the 10th in the discipline. The Italian Mattia Casse completes the podium.
La der de Feuz, Monney impresses
Despite the thrilling duel between the two strong men, all eyes were on Beat Feuz for his latest Lauberhorn. The Olympic champion failed to seek a fourth crown. In front of his partner and his two daughters, the Bernese tried everything, but he lacked that little something to go all out. Unlike Odermatt, Kugelblitz once more lost time in the second part of the race to finally fail in 5th place at 1”25.
Already placed the day before in Super-G, the Swiss have once once more signed a superb overall result. Winner of the second training session on the entire track, Niels Hintermann confirmed in the race by taking 7th place. Very good race also for Gilles Roulin, 8th behind his team colleague. Already 8th at Bormio, the Zurich native is going through a very good run at the moment.
And what regarding the descent of Alexis Monney! The 23-year-old from Friborg clinched 10th place on the occasion of his first Lauberhorn. And this despite a more than shaky reception at Hundschopf. Fourth in the second sector, the Châtelois proved to be able to recover following committing a fault for a first career top 10 which certainly calls for others.
Second in the Super-G on Friday, Stefan Rogentin was expected in the downhill. Graubünden had a decent race to take provisional 13th place.
