Two days before the primary election in the US state of New Hampshire, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has ended his candidacy for the US Republican presidential nomination. He announced his decision on Sunday on the X platform, formerly Twitter, and expressed his support for former President Donald Trump. DeSantis’ poll numbers have been poor recently, with Trump in the lead by a clear margin.

“It’s clear to me that the majority of Republican voters want to give Donald Trump another chance in the primaries,” he said in a video on was second place in the primaries. He said Republicans cannot return to the “old Republican guard of yesterday, a repackaged form of warmed-over corporatism” that Haley represents.

DeSantis entered the 2024 presidential campaign with strong prospects to take on Trump, fueled by his roaring re-election in Florida in 2022. Early pre-election polls suggested the 45-year-old was in a strong position to beat Trump. He and his allies amassed a campaign budget well over $100 million, and he had a strong policy record on issues important to many conservatives, including abortion and racial and gender schooling.

But the reality was different: From announcing his candidacy in the Republican field in conversation with Elon Musk on his platform, which was plagued by technical glitches, to ongoing problems with staff and his campaign strategy, DeSantis struggled to gain a foothold in the primaries to understand. He lost the Iowa caucuses last Monday to Trump by a margin of 30 percentage points.

His political future is now uncertain. His second term as governor of Florida ends in January 2027 and he cannot run once more.
