An organization from Florida condemned this Friday, March 22, the idea of the governor of this state, Republican Ron DeSantis, of replicating the Texas SB-4 law, a draconian norm that allows state security forces to deport undocumented immigrants detained at the border.

The Florida Immigrant Coalition (FLIC) spoke out in this way following DeSantis confessed in an interview with conservative presenter Sean Hannity that his Government is working to try to implement, through a special legislative session, a rule in Florida to give its security forces “more authority to arrest and detain.”

“I think that would be a big disincentive to come,” added the former Republican presidential candidate.

This organization warned that SB-4 is “a civil rights nightmare, and A similar version in Florida would expose the state to costly litigation, like the current legal back-and-forth taking place in Texas,” which might mean millions of dollars in public funds to residents.

The Texas measure, promoted by its governor, Republican Greg Abbott, makes it a misdemeanor for a foreigner to “enter or attempt to enter the state from a foreign nation” irregularly, under penalty of up to six months in prison. If the offender is a repeat offender, the offense becomes a serious crime, punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

The rule is the cause of a battle in court for the possible usurpation of federal power over immigration policy and, following a favorable ruling by the Supreme Court that allowed it to go into effect for a few hours, the initiative is currently suspended by order of an appeals court.

Last week, Governor DeSantis authorized the deployment of 250 troops from state agencies to the south of the state and to the keys, with a view to stopping the possible arrival of a “wave” of Haitian migrants fleeing the current crisis in their country.

With the new law, Texas police will be able to make arrests and expulsions without further processing at the border, something Florida seeks to match. (Free Press Photo: EFE)

The decision earned criticism from civil organizations in South Florida, where the largest community of Haitians in the US is located.

They added that given the crisis facing the Caribbean nation There should be a “compassionate response” rather than “militarization” of the border.

DeSantis has threatened to fly Haitian immigrants in Florida to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, has mobilized hundreds of State and National Guard troops to South Florida and “now threatening to waste more of our tax dollars on another special session to demonize Haitians,” lamented the director of FLIC, Tessa Petit.

The executive director of FLIC added in a statement that “the Coast Guard itself says that there is no influx of immigrants from Haiti.
