Several freight train cars derailed onto the banks of the Lehigh River, a tributary of the Delaware River, in Pennsylvania on Saturday, resulting in the spillage of diesel fuel and plastic pellets into the water, as reported by authorities.

The incident occurred in Lower Saucon Township, approximately 10 miles east of Allentown. Promptly responding to the derailment, the Northampton County Emergency Management Services and the Lehigh County hazardous materials team arrived at the scene to assess the damage.

The good news is that there were no evacuations, injuries, or leaks from any containers, according to a statement released by Northampton County on their Facebook page.

Social media posts shared by witnesses depicted the followingmath of the derailment, showing locomotives on the river banks, with one partially submerged, and several container cars off the tracks.

County executive Lamont McClure clarified that although some of the derailed cars were marked as carrying hazardous materials, they were actually empty. As a precautionary measure, air monitoring is being conducted, with no danger currently detected.

The Lehigh River faced contamination from spilled diesel fuel and polypropylene plastic pellets, according to Lower Saucon police chief Thomas Barndt. Authorities have set up containment booms to mitigate the spill. The cause of the derailment remains unknown.

During the incident, members of the train crew were stranded on the river bank and had to be assisted with ropes to climb up to the road.

Despite media requests for comments, Norfolk Southern, the owner of the Lehigh Line, a major freight railroad route spanning New Jersey and Pennsylvania, has yet to respond.
