Pending the Constitutional Court’s decision on the results of the legislative elections, the presidential coalition Benno Bokk Yaakar finally achieved an absolute majority in the National Assembly. This majority is not however comfortable, while the inter-coalition of the opposition Yewwi Askane Wi – Wallu retains its 80 parliamentary seats.

« We must avoid leading to a blockage in the functioning of our institutions said Pape Diop, one of three deputies who was not part of either of the two main coalitions in competition. A “ National Assembly placed under the control of the opposition will lead to an institutional crisis “, he believes, because” the President of the Republic would have to govern by decree, which would be a setback for our democracy “. Hence his decision to join the camp of President Macky Sall.

He thus joins the parliamentary group which will be set up by the presidential coalition Benno Bokk Yaakar. Thanks to his rallying, the power camp now has 83 seats out of 165.

The former president of the National Assembly, at the head of the Bokk Guiss Guiss Liguey coalition, won a seat in the last legislative elections, where the opposition and the majority came neck and neck, placing him and two other deputies in king makers ».

With this additional seat, the coalition in power certainly obtains an absolute majority, but which remains uncomfortable, because the slightest defection might make them lose a vote, estimates political scientist Moussa Diaw. The eyes are therefore now riveted on the two deputies who have not yet decided on the camp they were going to join.
