Deputy Mayor Kathrin Gaál invites you to the “GB*Gartelwochen”: “Grätzl experts give free Gartel tips!” | PID press

City gardens with added value: planting tree pits or “balconies” and strengthening biodiversity with the area support for urban renewal (GB*)

Vienna (OTS) Spring has arrived and the new gardening season has begun! The Urban Renewal Area Offices (GB*) invite you to the “GB*Gartelwochen” in April: Plants are exchanged and gardening tips shared on several dates, and in all GB* district offices the green space experts provide free advice and information on the city gardens and inner courtyard – and facade greening. Anyone who doesn’t have a balcony or garden can, thanks to “Gardens around the corner”, green tree pits and small areas in public spaces and thus contribute to a good climate in the neighbourhood.

“Every year it is a great pleasure to see how much commitment and love the Viennese put into beautifying our city – and thus campaigning for good togetherness in the Grätzl. The quality of life for everyone in the neighborhood increases with every blooming tree slab and every green spot – and your own neighborhood becomes even more livable and lovable. The GB* experts have a lot of gardening tips once more this year – for the balcony as well as for the design of tree grates,” says Deputy Mayor and City Councilor for Women and Housing Kathrin Gaál.

Gardening around the corner: Become a tree disc sponsor now!

In Vienna, many residents are already gardening “around the corner” and are now greening around 1,600 tree pits. This is made possible by the GB* initiative “Gardens around the corner”. www.gbstern.at/garteln

Flowering tree discs are not only pleasing to the eye, they also bring real added value. With flowering plants that provide food for native insects, urban biodiversity is strengthened. The Urban Renewal Area Offices (GB*) give tips on designing near-natural tree pits so that bees, butterflies and the like can find a suitable habitat. The denser the network of habitats, the easier it is for plants and animal species to maintain their populations. Every garden, every flowering tree pit makes an important contribution to this.

How does “Garden around the corner” work?

Simply find a public street tree near your home and send the tree number (visible on the tree), address of the location and photo (of the soil surrounding the tree) to the nearest Urban Renewal Office. The GB* checks whether the tree disc is available. If so, a design agreement is signed and off you go with “gardening around the corner”!

Working together for biodiversity: Planting the tree disc ecologically and “insect-friendly”.

The location of the tree grate is very important and crucial for whether the planted plants thrive and grow! When choosing plants, it is therefore definitely worth taking a look at the location of the tree disc. An alternative to the conventional planting of a tree disc are wild flowers (e.g. daisies, etc.), which provide habitat and food for a wide variety of insects such as bees and butterflies and thus contribute to biological diversity.

If you decide to design your tree disc with wildflowers, it is best to start with a few plants and experiment. It is a good idea to let neighbors know that wildflowers are growing in the tree grate so they are not mistaken for weeds.

At www.gbstern.at/gartelinfos there is a list of plants – compiled according to location and according to ecological gardening criteria – and many other practical instructions for anyone interested to download free of charge. / Ending
