As a result of the visit that President Gabriel Boric made last week to the Ñuble Region, to inaugurate the new fast train service between Chillán and Santiago, the deputy for District 19, Cristóbal Martínez (UDI), asked the Company of the State Railways (EFE) and the Ministry of Transportation that the station in the regional capital bear the name of former President Sebastián Piñera, in tribute to the efforts he made during his government to carry out the desired project.

In this regard, and along with celebrating the inauguration of the new service, the union parliamentarian recalled that it was in mid-2019 when the former President announced this initiative, which will increase the number of passengers that move annually from 230 to 800 thousand, reducing travel times. in regarding three hours round trip.

For this reason, the representative of Ñuble assured that “it is most logical and sensible that the work and will of the previous government in carrying out this important initiative can be recognized,” ensuring that US$ 115 million were announced in said opportunity – which later increased to almost US$ 150 million – mainly in the construction of new infrastructure and the acquisition of six modern trains that can even reach 160 kilometers per hour.

“It is very important that the decision to modernize the train service between our region and Santiago has continued, and above all to recover the service that had been seriously damaged as a result of the floods we had last year. But we cannot lose sight of the fact that it was in 2019 when the political decision was made to invest more than 100 million dollars to improve land connectivity in our area. This shows that projects of this nature are works of State that transcend the governments in power, but that prevents – in no case – the recognition of those who were their promoters,” said Deputy Martínez.

For the same reason, and as has been done on other occasions, when it has been proposed to change the name – via bill – of some Carabineros police station, aerodromes or bridges, the UDI parliamentarian requested that the Chillán terminal bear the name of “President Sebastián Piñera Station”, in memory of the deceased former President. Along these lines, Martínez assured that he will request the support of the Government so that this request can soon become a reality.

“This is a gesture that would speak highly of the current administration, because it would recognize those who promoted this initiative almost five years ago. That is why we will formally request EFE and the Government, through the Ministry of Transportation, to study this request in the short term. Former President Piñera had a vision of the State, without caring that it was not his government that inaugurated this important service. And what better gesture, in tribute to him and his entire administration, that the Chillán Station can be named following him,” reiterated the UDI deputy.
