Deputies strengthen cooperation ties with Karina Villa, senator from Illinois

Morelia, Michoacán, December 16, 2022.- To strengthen ties of cooperation, deputies of the 75th Legislature received at the State Congress Democrat Karina Villa, senator for the 25th district in the state of Illinois.

The president of the Board of Directors, Julieta García Zepeda and the members of the Migration Commission, Eréndira Isauro and Jesús Hernández Peña, together with the senator, toured the facilities of the Legislative Palace.

At the time, during the meeting, they established their commitment to work in favor of migrants from Michoacán living in the United States.

The senator shared her Michoacán roots, which has motivated her to work in favor of migrants, managing to specify laws that have allowed medical security for those over 42 years of age.

In addition, he said, he is committed to promoting federal reforms that allow regularizing the immigration status of those who currently work there, but who cannot return to their places of origin.

Legislators Gabriela Cázares Blanco and Ma. Belinda Hurtado Marín joined the guided tour, as well as representatives of migrant clubs and Pilar Durán, who is in charge of Casa Michoacán in Chicago.

Before them, the senator recalled that when she nominated for the Democratic Party, being a woman and with Mexican roots, she was seriously criticized, but that being a resident of the town of West Chicago, the place where her grandfather came to work and where they live Hundreds of Michoacáns came together to grant her the votes that led her to occupy her position in the Illinois Senate.

Karina Villa, prior to her election to the Illinois House of Representatives in 2018, was a member of the West Chicago District 33 Board of Education, where she grew up with her family of migrant parents, small business owners in said community, with roots in Zinapécuaro, Michoacán.

The senator has shown interest in issues such as labor rights and women’s health; gender equality; migrants and environment; and she has legislated on workers’ rights; education; police and prison policy; LGBTQ+ rights; cannabis; racial justice; climate and energy; medical care and abortion.

In terms of immigration, he promoted reforms to authorize temporary guardians for the children of people who have been deported.
