Last Thursday, the government of the Cayman Islands returned four irregular migrants to the Republic of Cuba. The Ministry of the Interior (MININT) of the largest of the Antilles, reported that in 2023 83 Cuban people have been returned. The citizens of the Caribbean island arrived at the José Martí International Airport in Havana. The MININT reported that this deportation constitutes the ninth in the current year.

In the last days of May, the Customs and Border Control authorities of the Cayman Islands (CBC) commented on the transfer of 4 Cubans. The maneuver to repatriate these Cuban natives was carried out by the airline Cayman Airways.

Detention centers have poor conditions

Three months ago, the Cayman Islands government announced that a facility for captured immigrants would be expanded. This measure was taken to multiply the reception capacity of Cubans who arrive asking for refuge.

Many of these emigrants have stated that they are overcrowded. In recent months, the United Kingdom’s dependent islands have detained several precarious boats with people emigrating from Cuba.

On March 3, 2023, 12 inhabitants of the Cuban archipelago were detained and later taken to the Bodden Town transit center. These dozen immigrants resided in rented houses and were being watched by customs police using digital cameras.

Several citizens of this group responded that the officers did not provide explanations when they were brought to the facility. They also said that there are no basic living conditions in the place.

The Cayman Islands began to deport Cubans 24 months following the impact of the Coronavirus. In addition, there is evidence of an exodus increased by Cuba’s economic problems. The government of the Cayman Islands assured that Cubans will be cared for in accordance with international laws and an individualized service will be offered.
